you can do this too
It would be great if you could help us fulfill our needs, but if you'd like to do more and want to build Sacks of Hope for homeless community members in your area for April, 2017 (or even before), let us know about it. Send us pictures. Tell us your story, and we'll post it all here.
If you are a parent and are interested in raising children who focus on kindness, take a look at teacher, Leon Lewandowski's, book (pen name: Leon Scott Baxter), Secrets of Safety-Net Parenting, where one chapter focuses exclusively on giving to others.
Woodlake Elementary Joins Us (3/8/17)
When Lisa Liss' elementary class learned about Sacks of Hope, they decided it was something they wanted to do. Just this week, they received their first donation for the 30 bags they are making for local homeless community members.
We're not surprised because Liss' class has been working on their own project for years, called The Bandage Project. Here's her explanation of it.
Many years ago, I needed a way to teach my students more about tolerance and intolerance issues. The Holocaust was a place to begin. There was a lot that was difficult for the students to understand, but they understood that because of hatred a man, Adolph Hitler, decided to have millions of people killed. In time, we began to be known as the Tolerance Kids. The Tolerance Kids wanted a way to represent the 1.5 million children who were murdered during the Holocaust. We decided that bandages would honor children; they come in all shapes, sizes and colors and most of all, heal pain. We have 792,242 bandages so far. We write the names of children who were killed during the Holocaust on every single bandage to honor those children. Our project honors all the children included in the 6 million Jewish victims, 5 million Polish Christians, Gypsies, handicapped, homosexuals and others who were also killed.
There are many more details about our program available to you as well as Power Points and You Tube Videos. Please search Lisa Liss Bandage Project, or txpuppywoman on you tube, or contact me directly. [email protected] We are almost to our first million and with support and help from you and your students, perhaps this will be the year we reach our goal. Our ultimate goal is to have a giant bandage created to hold all 1.5 million bandages and display it at the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles for all to honor the children’s lives. I am able to purchase bandages 100 for $1 if that is an easier way to supply us with bandages. We have all the letters in binders and hope to turn our project into a book as well. Rachel’s Challenge will be included in our book as well. So, please send me pictures as you mail envelopes or collect bandages to mail to us.
Thank you for your help and please, do not hesitate to ask me anything. A few supporters who would welcome any contact about our project are as follows:
Axel Hannemann: (Original principal when we started the project) [email protected]
Erin Gruwell: (Original Teacher in Long Beach that the movie Freedom Writers was created for) [email protected] or [email protected]
Karen Gibson: (A Freedom Writer teacher in Maryland) [email protected]
