our story
We are a class of third and fourth graders at Franklin School in Santa Barbara.
Our teacher, Mr. Lewandowski, started The April Random Acts of Challenge in 2012, when he saw how a small act made some young people down on their luck, change for the moment. So, he challenged himself, friends, family, and eventually his students to do a Random Act of Kindness (RAOK) each day for the month of April.

The challenge has caught on and children in schools across the country are making plans for kindness this spring.
Our class started early. We brainstormed the first month of school and decided we would build twenty-five (one for each student in the class) "Sacks of Hope" to help our local homeless community members. We were partly inspired by our honorary class member, Kid President, who we watch nearly daily on YouTube.
Franklin School is just a half mile from the main street in our community, where you can find homeless community members daily. We all thought we wanted to do something to help these people.
We created a list of items that we'd want for each "Sack" and have made plans to get these items in time for Spring, 2017. We will be collaborating with Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness.
We have run a drive at our school for some items (over 400 items donated), will ask local businesses for others, are approaching local churches and organizations for still others, and will be writing letters to businesses asking for donations for our projects.
